Welcome Reception
Monday 8 May 2017(19h30-21h30)
AT MUSEU ARQUEOLÓGICO, IN THE CITY CENTRE

Faro Municipal Museum was the second museum to be created in the Algarve. In 1894, on the 500th anniversary of the birth of Infante Dom Henrique (Henry the Navigator), Faro inaugurated the Museum Archeológico Lapidar Infante D. Henrique dedicated to the heroe of Sagres. Its current location, where the Welcome Party will take place, was ordered to be built by Queen Leonor in 1518. It was aimed at the sheltering of the Santa Clara nuns.

The museum’s archaeological collection is the most significant, with artifacts from pre-historical, roman and medieval periods. The most important objects are those from the roman period which include a mosaic from the 2nd/3rd centuries, the busts of Emperor Hadrian and Agrippina and a collection of epigraphs of Ossónoba. The high quality painting collection from the 16th to 19th century is mainly composed of religious works of art, originating from ancient temples in the Algarve. Usually holds several challenging temporary exhibitions per year.

The Museum has been a member of the Portuguese Museum Network since 2002 and it was awarded with the prize for the best Portuguese Museum in the triennial 2003/05 by the Portuguese Association of Museology.

Conference Dinner
Thursday 11 May 2017(19h30-22h00)
CONFERENCE DINNER AT PALÁCIO DE ESTOI

It is in the Algarve which is known to very few, the area of barrocal, between the coast and the mountains, where the temperature is more pleasant and the smell of carob and orange trees fills the air. You see a yellow and pink palace, considered by many as the ultimate expression of Romanticism in Algarve. The Palace of Estoi is a rococo building renowned for its gardens and azulejos (blue and white tiled ceramic). The palace was built in the late 19th century and is the finest example of this kind of architecture in the district of Faro.

A special dinner bus will be available to take conference attendees from city center/hotels to the conference dinner at Palacio de Estoi. At the conference dinner the return bus will include the usual stops at hotels/city center.
